A:
It is a patented lightweight precast panel system that is one of the most innovative construction systems available today. This hybrid precast panel combines Nexcon innovatively designed light-gauge-steel framing embedded in as little as between 2” to 3” concrete to produce a composite system superior to any conventional product on the market. The combined “concrete-and-steel” panel offers the strength of a solid precast panel, while using much less concrete as compared to conventional precast. Nexcon precast panels are designed for load bearing and shear wall conditions, foundation walls, floor slab and cladding to enclose pre-engineered structures.

Q: What is the weight of a Nexcon Lightweight Precast panel compared to a conventional precast panel?

A: Nexcon panel weighs between 35 to 45 pounds per square foot whereas the average conventional precast panel weighs around 85 pounds per square foot, thus a Nexcon panel is almost one-third the weight of a conventional precast panel.
 

 
Q: What is the standard size of a Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System panel?

A: Any structural, curtain wall, in-fill, double sided and retrofit panel within and up to 10-feet by 40-feet can be manufactured.
 

 
Q: What´s the largest Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System panel design?

A: Nexcon´s largest economical panel size is 10-feet by 40-feet. There is a significant additional shipping cost for larger panels. For tilt-up construction our panel size can be up to 20-feet by 50-feet.

Q: How competitive is Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System in cost compared to other solid precast cladding systems?

A: Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System is very competitive due to the use of minimal concrete and lightweight framing that uses less material as compared to other solid precast system. Factory pre-installation of doors, windows, and electrical and mechanical services minimizes site labour time and reduces construction critical paths.
 

 
Q: What is the installed cost per square foot?

A: Installed cost per square foot depends upon project location, complexity and design. The overall project cost may however be significantly reduced through the elimination of the scaffold for building exterior, reduction of scheduling as panels can be shipped to construction site ready for immediate installation year round, and the self-supporting capacity of the panels for multi story load bearing applications that may eliminate heavy structural steel.
 

 
Q: How long does it take to get a quotation?

A: 1 - 2 weeks for most preliminary estimates and reviews of the project. We will strive to work within your time frame to provide thorough estimates on a timely basis.
 

 
Q: What is the time frame for production, delivery and installation?

A: A typical production of an average project of 40,000 square feet of exterior cladding is around 12 weeks after start of shop drawings. Installation is usually completed approximately 6 to 8 weeks from the start of delivery of Nexcon panels to the project site (panels can be delivered to site once they are ready).
 

 
Q: How do you deliver the panels?

A: Panels are delivered to the project on trailers.

A: Yes. Nexcon in-house engineering and design team will deliver the solutions that will meet your project requirements from initial design & engineering consultation to project completion.
 

 
Q: Are the drawings reviewed and stamped by an engineer?

A: Yes, all Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System drawings are stamped by registered professional engineers.

Q: What is the dead load of the Nexcon panel?

A: 35 - 45 psf depending on the size and dimension of the steel section used.
 

 
Q: Can Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System be designed for load-bearing applications?

A: Yes. The self-supporting capacity of Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System may eliminate some columns and beams on some designs, thus reducing some costs.
 

 
Q: What is the wind loading?

A: Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System panels can be designed to accommodate any level of wind as per code requirements. The system has been used in the highest Seismic Zone area (2004 Tsunami affected area with wind speed of 27 m/s) for UN schools and clinics.

A: Yes. With the proper fireproof insulation and the appropriate fireboard backing attached to the frame, Nexcon panels can be made to reach the ratings required by codes for firewalls.
 

 
Q: How do you handle the fire-stop between floors?

A: There are companies in the industry that have certified procedures for 2-hour-rating fire-stop methods such as: Hilti, STI Inc., and Tremco.

Q: What are the gauges and sizes of the steel stud and track?

A: The gauge depends on the design. Gauges 20, 18, 16, and 14 can be supplied for:
  • Steel stud size: 3-5/8, 4, 6, 8 inch
  • Joist size: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 inch
  • Track size: 3-5/8, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 inch
 

 
Q: How thick is the galvanizing?

A: G60 and G90 galvanized steel can be supplied.
 

 
Q: What are the specifications for Nexcon steel stud and track products?

A: Nexcon uses A653 Grade 33 (33 KSI minimum yield) for Gauge 20 and 18 steel and A653 Grade 50 (50 KSI minimum yield) for Gauge 16, and 14 steel.

A: Attachment to the building perimeter is by gravity and lateral connections at the floor slab or steel / concrete frame.

A: The windows and doors are attached using shims and screws to the Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System panel openings.
 

 
Q: Can windows, doors, and electrical and mechanical systems be installed in the plant?

Yes. Nexcon open-web stud and panel design provides ease of factory or site installation of the electrical and mechanical systems.
 

 
Q: How large can a projection be on the panel?

Roofs, Floors, Canopies, Screen Wall

 
Q: Can Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System be made to cantilever past a floor or roof?

A: Yes.
 

 
Q: Can handrails and screens be attached to the Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System panels?

A:
Yes. Design must however be approved by the structural engineer and Nexcon design team.
 

 

Q: How is the gap between the floor and panel plugged?

A: Through the use of light-gauge break metal provided and installed by the drywall contractor during the installation of the drywall.

 

 
Q: Can Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System be used as a screen wall on top of a building?

A: Yes. Nexcon can offer a sandwich / double-sided panel. When using Nexcon single-sided panel in this application, the back of the panel must be sealed with a stain or waterproof coating or by applying a weather-tight sheathing for protection against the elements.
 

 
Q: Does Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System have to be enclosed on the back to be used as a screen wall?

A: Yes, only if the steel framing is exposed to the elements of weather, otherwise Nexcon can provide a double-sided / sandwich concrete panels.
 
 

Sealants, Water and Vapour

 
Q: How do you seal between the panels?

A: Weatherproofing the Nexcon panels is carried out by caulking contractors that use the most up-to-date sealants on the market.
 

 
Q: How do you seal the roof panels?

A: The roofing contractor provides the roofing membrane to tie the roof panels to the roof. Design of the connection to the roof membrane is dependant upon the type and style of the panel that you choose for your project.
 

 
Q: Is there a vapor barrier?

A: Vapor barriers can be applied as recommended by consultant.
 

 
Q: What is the R-value?

A: R-values of R20 to R40 can be achieved depending on the type of insulation used.
 
 

LEED Credit

 
Q: Does the use of Nexcon Innovative Lightweight Precast Building System panels help building owners achieve LEED certification?

A: Five categories have been identified where Nexcon precast panels help contribute to LEED credit:
 
  1. Recycled content.
    Most steel produced has significant recycled content. When building is eventu ally demolished concrete and steel can be separated for recycling.
  2. Energy efficient.
    Open-web steel sections decrease thermal losses. They can also accommo date additional insulation.
  3. Locally available products.
    Most panels are produced using locally extracted raw materials.
  4. Innovation credit - Transportation.
    Lighter weight thin shell precast allows two or more times as many panels per truck load - cutting fuel consumption, air pollution, tire wear and other environ mental impact.
  5. Innovation credit - Green house gases.
    By cutting quantity of concrete used for precast, thin shell reduces amount of CO2 emission - a major green house gas associated with cement produced for the project.
